It’s not required, but it’s definitely helpful to test your spores first to ensure they are clean. Inoculating spores directly onto grain might work, but it is extremely unreliable.
That’s why we recommend transferring them to agar first.

For a steam bath, we recommend 1 hour. Using a pressure cooker, sterilize at 15 psi for 30 minutes or at 12 psi for 45 minutes.

This can happen if some moisture gets into the mixture, but it’s not a problem. As long as there is no mold, you can use it like a normal mixture. Mixing with water might just take a little longer.
