What Is a Sterilized Grain Spawn Bag?

A sterilised millet grain bag is a ready-to-use bag of hydrated grain that we’ve sterilised in an industrial-grade autoclave. It has a filter patch for fresh air and a self-healing injection port, so you can add your liquid culture. The mycelium then colonises the grain, usually within a few weeks. The result is grain spawn, which you can mix into a substrate. Our spawn bag is filled with hydrated and sterilized millet grain. From our experience, millet grain works best if you a quick colonisation. We offer 3 sizes: 1 kg, 1.5 kg and 2 kg.

Compatible Mushroom Strains

Fully colonized sterilized grain spawn bag showing healthy white mycelium and four key setup features for fast cultivation.

Our grain spawn bags work with most cultivated mushroom species, so you can use them for almost any project:

Coir-loving species: grow well on coco coir substrates, which makes them a good fit for beginners.
Dung-loving species: prefer manure-based substrates and can give big flushes.
Medicinal mushrooms: such as Lion’s Mane and Reishi.
Gourmet mushrooms: such as Oyster, Shiitake and King Oyster.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long until the bag is fully colonised?

About 4 weeks for most bags, and it depends on the species, the temperature and how much liquid culture you used. Bigger bags take slightly longer. A bag is ready when the grain is covered in white mycelium.

How much liquid culture or spores do I inject?

Inoculate the grain directly through the injection port with a spore syringe or liquid culture. Use 2-3 ml for the small bag (1 kg), 3-4 ml for the medium bag (1.5 kg) and 5-6 ml for the large bag (2 kg).

We recommend liquid culture, because spore syringes are much more likely to bring in contamination.

How long can I store an unused bag?

For best results, use your bag within 4 weeks of arrival. After that it usually still works, but not as well, because the grain slowly dries out and that slows down mycelium growth. Keep it somewhere cool and dark until you’re ready to inoculate.

How do I know if it’s contamination?

Healthy mycelium is white and fluffy, or sometimes slightly thin and stringy. Green, blue, black, pink or yellow patches, slimy grain or a sour smell mean contamination. If you see any of these, don’t open the bag.

My bag has stalled, what now?

Check the temperature first. Mycelium grows very slowly below 19°C, so move the bag somewhere warmer. If the temperature is fine and the mycelium has stopped growing, break and shake the bag. Healthy mycelium will start growing again within a few days. If it doesn’t, or you see coloured patches or notice a sour smell, the bag is probably contaminated.

How to Use a Sterilised Grain Bag

Inoculating a sterilised mushroom grain bag with a spore or liquid culture syringe through the injection port to start mycelium growth

    1. Inoculation

White mycelium colonising the grain inside a sterilised mushroom grain bag, spreading outward from the injection port during incubation

    2. Colonisation

Breaking up and shaking a partly colonised sterilised grain bag to spread mycelium evenly through the mushroom grain for faster colonisation

    3. Break & Shake

Fully colonised sterilised grain bag covered in white mycelium, ready to be cut open and used as mushroom grain spawn for substrate

    4. Fully Colonised

Spawning colonised grain from a sterilised grain bag into mushroom substrate to start fruiting and grow gourmet mushrooms at home

    5. Spawn to Bulk

High-quality polypropylene grow bag with filter patch and self-healing injection port.

More About the Grow Bags We Use

The bag is the most important part of your grow because it’s the foundation for everything that follows. Cheap bags can leak, let in contamination or even rip just when you’re almost ready to harvest. We don’t want that for you. That’s why we use high-quality bags:

    • ✓0.08mm thick, robust and puncture-resistant, won't tear during handling or shipping
    • ✓0.2 µm filter patch, allows air exchange for the mycelium to breathe, without letting contamination enter
    • ✓Silicone rubber injection port, heat resistant with self-healing ability for contamination-free inoculation
    • ✓100% polypropylene material, heat and pressure resistant, won't melt or break during sterilisation
    • ✓Heat resistant up to 121°C, withstands pressure sterilisation at 15 PSI without warping, melting or leaking
Industrial autoclave sterilising mushroom grow bags for 3 hours at 15 PSI, eliminating mold and bacteria for perfect results.

How We Ensure the Quality of Our Bags

We want every bag to arrive in the best quality we can provide, so you can start your grow with confidence. That is why we take extra care at every step, from sterilisation and sealing to testing each batch before it ships.

    • ✓Made fresh to order: Your bag is prepared shortly before it ships, so it arrives fresh and ready to grow. We produce our bags once a week, every Monday. Orders placed by Sunday are made on Monday and shipped within 1-2 days. This way you always receive the best quality.
    • ✓Sterilised for 3 hours at 15 PSI: Every bag is processed in an industrial autoclave to kill contamination like mold spores and bacteria. We decided to run a full 3-hour cycle just to make sure.
    • ✓Batch tested by inoculation: One bag from every batch is inoculated as a test to make sure the batch is clean before we ship it out.
    • ✓Sealed in front of a laminar flow hood: We seal our bags in a clean-air environment to keep contaminants out.
    • ✓Double-welded seams: Each bag is sealed with an 8 mm double-sided weld for a strong, durable seam that holds up during shipping and the grow process.
Premium, completely chemical-free natural millet grain used in our sterilised grain bags for perfect hydration and fast colonisation.

More About the Millet Grain We Use

Using the right grain is just as important as everything else. Not only do different grains offer different benefits for growing mushrooms, but each type also needs its own hydration process because of its structure, starch content and more.

    • ✓Millet grain, best for fast colonisation
    • ✓Natural, food-grade grain, chemical-free with a low natural spore load
    • ✓Properly hydrated for 24 hours, ensuring optimal moisture level
    • ✓Added gypsum, preventing grain clumping for better airflow

    Free Replacement Policy

Our replacement policy covers bags that arrive contaminated or damaged during shipping. If this happens, we’ll send a new bag at no extra cost.

How it works: Please inspect your bag carefully as soon as it arrives. If you notice any contamination or damage, take clear photos and send it to us within 48 hours of delivery, before opening or inoculating the bag. You can reach us via email, our contact form, or Discord, whichever is easiest for you. Once we’ve confirmed the issue, we’ll ship your replacement.

What’s not covered: Bags after inoculation, for example with spores or liquid culture. We can only guarantee sterility up to the point of inoculation. Once you introduce your own genetics or open the bag, we have no control over your workspace or the quality of the genetics used, so contamination from that point on falls outside what we can be responsible for.
