Get started with your liquid culture kit

Want to try making your own mushroom liquid culture? This approachable liquid culture kit brings the key tools together, so you can set up at home without hunting down the small essentials one by one.

Liquid culture is a nutrient-rich liquid in which mushroom mycelium grows. When prepared and used properly, it is a handy way to expand a culture and inoculate multiple points in a substrate. Compared with grain spawn, liquid culture can offer more inoculation points and may help colonization move faster. Results depend on your culture, technique and growing conditions.

Whether this is your first DIY culture project or you are adding a simple tool to your grow setup, this liquid culture kit keeps the process organized. Choose your preferred nutrient medium, prepare it with your own trusted method and use the included supplies to get started.

What Is a Liquid Culture Kit and What Is Included?

A liquid culture kit lets you grow and multiply mushroom mycelium in nutrient broth at home.

This mushroom liquid culture kit includes 2 jars with filter patch lids and injection ports, 2 sterile syringes, 4 needles, alcohol pads, labels and marbles. Nutrient medium is not included.

How Do I Make a Liquid Culture?

Mix honey or light malt extract with water, fill the jar 50 to 70 percent, and sterilize it in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for 20 to 30 minutes.

Let it cool completely, wipe the injection port with an alcohol pad and inject your spore or culture syringe. Our calculator gives exact amounts.

How Many cc of Liquid Culture Per Jar Do I Need?

Most growers use about 1 to 3 cc of liquid culture per quart-sized grain jar, and a little more for larger jars or bags. One syringe can therefore inoculate several jars.

Inject through the self-healing port, then shake the jar well to spread the mycelium evenly through the grain.

Why Do the Liquid Culture Jar Lids Have a Filter Patch and Injection Port?

The 0.2 µm filter patch lets air in and out while blocking contaminants, so your mycelium can breathe safely.

The self-healing injection port lets you inoculate and draw liquid culture with a syringe without opening the jar. Both are pressure cooker safe and the zinc coating resists rust.

Can I Use This Kit With a Spore Syringe?

This method works great as the Starter Kit was designed based on the combined experience of many growers and uses proven techniques such as monotubs and still air boxes, which are trusted by cultivators around the world.

It’s especially effective with P. cubensis, like Golden Teacher, a beginner-friendly strain known for its resilience against contamination, temperature fluctuations, and common beginner mistakes.

Even if you're experiencing problems with contamination, don't worry. There are several ways to deal with it. That's why we created an article especially for Starter Kit users to help them increase their chances of success: 7 Ways to Prevent Contamination Using the Starter Kit.

Note: Success rates can vary depending on the equipment used. For example, using a pressure cooker instead of a steam bath can significantly improve sterilization and increase your chances of success.
