What Is a Sterilized CVG Substrate Bag?

Discover the lab-grade features of our sterilised cvg mushroom substrate, pre-mixed with coco coir, vermiculite, and pure gypsum.

A sterilized CVG substrate bag is a ready-to-use bulk substrate for growing mushrooms at home. The bag is already filled, hydrated and sterilised, so you can skip the mixing, the measuring and the pressure cooker. You only need to add your colonised grain spawn, and the bag does the rest.

Our bag contains CVG substrate, a classic mix of coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum. Coco coir holds moisture and gives the mycelium plenty of room to spread. Vermiculite keeps the mix airy and helps it retain water. Gypsum supplies calcium and sulphur and prevents the substrate from clumping. A built-in filter patch allows fresh air exchange while keeping contaminants out, so the bag works as a closed system with its own microclimate.

Substrate bag or all-in-one bag? The all-in-one bag already contains grain spawn. The substrate bag comes without it, so it is the right choice if you already have your own grain spawn, want to scale up a grow or like to control each step yourself. Check out our All-In-One Grow Bags.

Compatible Mushroom Strains

Abundant mushrooms fruiting directly from an all-in-one grow bag. Enjoy your first harvest in 6 to 8 weeks with zero hassle.

This sterilized CVG substrate bag is suitable for many different strains, especially:

Coir-loving species: They thrive on coco coir-based substrates, known for fast colonisation and reliable fruiting.
Dung-loving species: They are naturally adapted to nutrient-rich, manure-based substrates, often producing large flushes.

Not sure whether your strain will like it? Ask us on Discord or via live chat and we'll gladly help.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which mushrooms can I grow with it?

Our substrate suits a wide range of species. It works especially well for coir- and dung-loving mushrooms, and many growers also use it for oyster, pioppino, lion’s mane and enoki.

Do I need to hydrate or sterilise the substrate?

No. Our substrate arrives sterilised and at perfect field capacity, so it is ready to use straight out of the bag. There is nothing to add, and the moisture level is already right for colonisation.

What is the best grain-to-substrate ratio?

A ratio of 1:3 (one part grain spawn to three parts substrate) gives a well-balanced result. If you want faster colonisation and extra protection against contamination, go for 1:2 or even 1:1.

How long can I store the substrate, and when should I use it?

Store your bag at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Over time the bag can slowly dry out, so for best results use it within 4-6 weeks. After that it is still good to use for several months, just check that the bag is intact and the substrate still feels moist.

What if my bag is damaged or arrives contaminated?

If your bag arrives damaged or contaminated before you’ve used it, we’ll send you a replacement free of charge. Just send us a photo and your order number.

Using Your All-In-One Mushroom Grow Bag

Illustration of step one in mushroom cultivation, showing a clear plastic grow bag filled with dark, unsterilized bulk substrate.

    1. Open & Prepare

Step two of growing mushrooms: pouring colonized grain spawn from a smaller bag into the open substrate grow bag for inoculation.

    2. Add Grain Spawn

Step three shows the sealed mushroom grow bag with a filter patch, containing the mixed substrate and grain spawn ready for incubation.

    3. Mix
    & Seal

Step four displays a fully colonized mushroom grow bag, where thick white mycelium has completely overtaken the internal substrate bulk.

    4. Colonisation

The final step shows a bountiful harvest of mature brown mushrooms fruiting abundantly from the top of the open, fully colonized bag.

More About the Grow Bags We Use

The bag is the most important part of your grow because it’s the foundation for everything that follows. Cheap bags can leak, let in contamination or even rip just when you’re almost ready to harvest. We don’t want that for you. That’s why we use high-quality bags:

    • ✓0.08mm thick, robust and puncture-resistant, won't tear during handling or shipping
    • ✓0.2 µm filter patch, allows air exchange for the mycelium to breathe, without letting contamination enter
    • ✓100% polypropylene material, heat and pressure resistant, won't melt or break during sterilisation
    • ✓Heat resistant up to 121°C, withstands pressure sterilisation at 15 PSI without warping, melting or leaking
Premium CVG mushroom substrate made of coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum used in our grow bags.

More About the Substrate We Use

The substrate is the second main component after the grain. We use CVG (coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum) substrate for all our grow bags because it’s proven to be one of the best for growing mushrooms. It provides good moisture retention and airflow for the mycelium to breathe, and it is also naturally resistant to contamination.

    • ✓Natural, chemical-free coco coir with harmful salts rinsed out
    • ✓Medium-grade vermiculite for optimal moisture retention and airflow
    • ✓Agricultural gypsum, added for calcium, sulfur, and as a pH buffer
    • ✓Proper field capacity, holding the moisture mycelium needs without waterlogging
    • ✓1:1 grain-to-substrate ratio for quick, even colonisation
Industrial autoclave sterilising mushroom grow bags for 3 hours at 15 PSI, eliminating mold and bacteria for perfect results.

How We Ensure the Quality of Our Bags

We want every bag to arrive in the best quality we can provide, so you can start your grow with confidence. That is why we take extra care at every step, from sterilisation and sealing to testing each batch before it ships.

    • ✓Made fresh to order: Your bag is prepared shortly before it ships, so it arrives fresh and ready to grow. We produce our bags once a week, every Monday. Orders placed by Sunday 11:59 pm are made on Monday and shipped within 1-2 days. This way you always receive the best quality.
    • ✓Sterilised for 3 hours at 15 PSI: Every bag is processed in an industrial autoclave to kill contamination like mold spores and bacteria. We decided to run a full 3-hour cycle just to make sure.
    • ✓Batch tested by inoculation: One bag from every batch is inoculated as a test to make sure the batch is clean before we ship it out.
    • ✓Sealed in front of a laminar flow hood: We seal our bags in a clean-air environment to keep contaminants out.
    • ✓Double-welded seams: Each bag is sealed with an 8 mm double-sided weld for a strong, durable seam that holds up during shipping and the grow process.

    Free Replacement Policy

Our replacement policy covers bags that arrive contaminated or damaged during shipping. If this happens, we’ll send a new bag at no extra cost.

How it works: Please inspect your bag carefully as soon as it arrives. If you notice any contamination or damage, take clear photos and send it to us within 48 hours of delivery, before opening or inoculating the bag. You can reach us via email, our contact form, or Discord, whichever is easiest for you. Once we’ve confirmed the issue, we’ll ship your replacement.

What’s not covered: Bags after inoculation, for example with spores or liquid culture. We can only guarantee sterility up to the point of inoculation. Once you introduce your own genetics or open the bag, we have no control over your workspace or the quality of the genetics used, so contamination from that point on falls outside what we can be responsible for.
