Psilocybe cubensis
Penis Envy Psilocybe cubensis
One of the most potent and recognisable strains of Psilocybe cubensis. Penis Envy is known for its unmistakable morphology, unusually high psilocybin content and deeply immersive effects. Recommended for experienced users only.
1. Strain Overview
Penis Envy is one of the most potent and iconic strains of Psilocybe cubensis, widely considered the benchmark for high-potency cultivation. Its distinctive phallic morphology with a thick, dense stem and a small, often underdeveloped cap makes it immediately recognisable and unlike any other cubensis variety.
Psilocybin content is reported at 1.0–1.5% dry weight, roughly double that of Golden Teacher. The experience is typically more intense, more visual and longer-lasting. Penis Envy is strictly recommended for experienced users. Growers should also note it produces fewer and slower spores, making sterile technique especially critical.
2. Origin & History
Penis Envy does not occur in nature. It is an entirely cultivated strain, developed through selective isolation from Psilocybe cubensis. Unlike wild cubensis varieties found on cattle dung in tropical regions, Penis Envy exists exclusively as a result of human cultivation and genetic selection.
Its origin is one of mycology's most debated stories. It is most commonly attributed to ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, who allegedly collected spores from an unusually large P. cubensis specimen in the Colombian Amazon in the early 1970s. The strain was later isolated, stabilised and distributed by cultivator Steven Pollock. Today, numerous sub-strains exist including Albino PE, Penis Envy #6 and Uncut PE.
Unlike most cubensis strains, Penis Envy rarely drops a full spore print due to its partially open cap, making spore collection more challenging and contributing to its relative scarcity.

4. Effects & the Psychedelic Experience
Penis Envy is widely regarded as producing one of the most intense cubensis experiences. Users report strong visual and auditory hallucinations, profound ego dissolution and deeply immersive inner journeys. The high potency means effects can onset faster and last longer than with average strains. Start with a significantly lower dose than you would with other cubensis strains.
Psilocybin works by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain, temporarily shifting how you perceive yourself and the world around you. The experience is highly personal and can range from euphoric and insightful to deeply challenging depending on dose, mindset and setting. Typical duration is 5–7 hours, with onset after oral ingestion within 15–45 minutes.
Common Effects by Dose
| Dose | Typical Effects |

Growing Methods
Monotub
A large, lidded plastic tub filled with bulk substrate (e.g. coco coir/vermiculite or pasteurised straw). The most popular method for higher yields. The sealed environment maintains humidity naturally and requires minimal daily effort once set up.
All-in-One Grow Bag
A pre-sterilised bag containing grain and bulk substrate in one unit. Simply inject spores and wait. Ideal for beginners stepping up from PF Tek, as the sealed bag greatly reduces contamination risk during colonisation.
PF Tek (Jars)
The classic beginner method using small glass jars filled with Brown Rice Flour and vermiculite. Each jar is inoculated individually, colonised, then transferred to a fruiting chamber. More labour-intensive but gives excellent control and is easy to learn.

Hybrid: Penis Envy × TexasA cross between PE and B+ cubensis. Known for producing wavy, irregular caps and exceptionally high psilocybin levels. Winner of the 2021 Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup.
Hybrid: Penis Envy × B+An early isolate of Penis Envy developed by Homestead. Features a more twisted, alien-like morphology with dense stems. Comparable potency to original PE with slightly faster colonisation.
Penis Envy IsolationA unique PE variant producing long, thin stems reminiscent of enoki mushrooms. Relatively rare and still being stabilised by cultivators. Potency similar to standard PE.
Penis Envy MutationFrequently Asked Questions
Penis Envy is a highly potent, cultivated strain of the Psilocybe cubensis psychedelic mushroom species. It is famous worldwide for its distinct phallic morphology and exceptionally high psilocybin content. Because it does not exist in the wild and produces very few spores, it remains a rare, highly sought-after benchmark strain for experienced users.
Penis Envy mushrooms are considered one of the strongest Psilocybe cubensis strains, typically containing 1.0% to 1.5% psilocybin by dry weight. This extreme alkaloid concentration makes them roughly twice as potent as average strains like Golden Teacher. The resulting psychedelic effects onset faster, last longer, and produce significantly more intense visual experiences.
Penis Envy mushrooms feature a uniquely thick, dense stem and a small, underdeveloped cap that rarely opens fully. The stem is typically heavily textured and cream-colored, while the bulbous cap is pale brown. Due to the high psilocin content, the dense white flesh bruises a deep, dark blue instantly when handled.
You should take significantly less Penis Envy than standard magic mushrooms, starting with a low dose of 0.3 to 0.7 grams. A medium dose ranges from 0.8 to 1.5 grams, which often induces intense visuals. Doses above 2.0 grams are strictly for highly experienced users. Always weigh your dried mushrooms with a precise digital scale.
Harvest Penis Envy when the cap just begins to separate from the stem, and the thick stalk feels slightly soft or squishy like a marshmallow. Unlike regular cubensis, the cap rarely flattens and the veil does not tear completely. Waiting for a spore drop reduces potency. Gently twist and pull the base to harvest.
