Many psychonauts don't like the taste of raw mushrooms. That's why shroom tea is one of the best ways to consume your mushrooms. They perfectly mask the earthy, muddy taste, are easy to make, and can help with nausea.

Instructions

  1. 1.

    Pick and Prepare Ingredients (Optional)

Fresh ingredients for flavouring tea including whole and halved lemons, sliced ginger root, and a jar of honey with a dipper on a wooden surface.
Before starting, decide which additional ingredients you would like to use. A tea bag or tea leaves are usually a good base to provide some flavour. It doesn't matter which tea you use, so choose what you like best.

Lemon can make the effects slightly stronger and the onset quicker, similar to the popular Lemon Tek method. You can use half a fresh lemon or around ~25ml lemon juice. Lime juice works as well.
Honey, sugar, or other sweeteners can drastically improve the taste. While mushroom tea doesn't have a strong flavour, it can still taste slightly earthy. Sweeteners mask this easily, so add as much as you like.
Ginger helps calm the stomach and reduce nausea. This is especially useful if you decide not to filter out the mushroom pieces and eat them, as they can sometimes cause stomach upset. About ~15 grams ginger is usually enough.
  2. 2.

    Heat Up Water

A modern electric glass kettle with water at a rolling boil and steam rising from the spout.
Next, heat up your water and wait until it boils. This usually doesn´t take longer than five minutes. In the meantime, you can prepare your mushrooms. Keep in mind that if you want to make larger amounts of tea, adjust the water accordingly.
  3. 3.

    Grind or Chop the Mushrooms

A person's hands sorting dried mushrooms on a wooden counter next to a stainless steel electric grinder.
First of all, decide how many magic mushrooms you want to use for your tea. Dosing varies depending on the strain and the experience level you want to achieve. For tea, you can usually use any amount you like, from microdosing to heroic doses. Use our Magic Mushroom Calculator to find your perfect dosage.

Now, chop up your mushrooms and try to cut them as small as possible, since smaller pieces allow the psilocybin (the active ingredient) to transfer into the water better. You can also grind them into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or a blender, or crush them into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.
I prefer cutting them rather than grinding them into a powder because it makes it much easier to strain them out later, but it's totally up to you.
  4. 4.

Pour Water and Let it Cool Down

Pouring hot water into a cup to prepare for brewing mushroom tea.
Once the water boils, pour the hot water into your cup or teapot and let it sit for about five minutes. This resting time brings the water to a suitable temperature for steeping and helps preserve the potency.
The water shouldn't be hotter than 60°C (140°F), as high temperatures can begin to degrade psilocybin, the active component in the mushrooms. Using a thermometer is recommended, but not mandatory.
  5. 5.

    Add Mushrooms and Other Ingredients

A glass mug containing a metal tea infuser with mushroom tea, steeping in hot water, with fresh lemon and ginger on the side.
Once the water has cooled down, put the mushrooms in a tea strainer and submerge them in the water. This makes removal easy later on, but it also works without a strainer. At this stage, you can also add tea, ginger, or lemon juice according to your preference.
    💡
You can drink the tea plain, but be aware that you'll still be able to taste the mushrooms.
  6. 6.

Let the Tea Steep for 15–20 Minutes

Mushroom tea steeping in a glass mug with a metal infuser, alongside a halved lemon and pieces of ginger root.
Allow the mixture to steep for 15 to 20 minutes. This provides enough time for the flavours and active compounds to fully infuse into the water, ensuring there is little to no loss of potency when you filter the solids out.
  7. 7.

Remove the Strainer and Sweeten Your Tea

A clear glass mug filled with dark brewed tea next to an open jar of honey with a wooden dipper on a kitchen counter.
Remove the strainer containing the ingredients. While you can eat the remaining mushroom pieces, it isn't necessary, as most of the active components are now suspended in the liquid. Additionally, mushroom fruit bodies are hard to digest and can cause nausea, which is why I recommend discarding them.
Your tea is now ready to enjoy! You can also add honey, sugar, or any other sweetener of your choice to further improve the taste.
  8. 8.

    Make it Latte (Optional)

Steaming Mushroom Tea Latte with Honey, Vanilla, Cinnamon, and Milk Ingredients on Wood Countertop
If you prefer your tea as a latte, that's no problem! Simply skip ingredients like ginger and lemon juice and use ~75 ml of any milk you like. Before adding the milk, heat it to a temperature similar to your tea, around 60°C (140°F).

You can do this by microwaving it for 1 to 2 minutes. Just be sure not to bring it to a boil. Once mixed, feel free to add spices like vanilla, pumpkin spice, or cinnamon. This makes for one of my favourite magic mushroom-infused drinks.

Conclusion

It's one of my favourite methods because tea is easy to make, covers the earthy mushroom taste, and I've never had any problems with nausea. The only minor disadvantage is that the tea should be consumed within a few hours of brewing, so it is not suitable for long-term storage.

It's also the perfect method for groups. You can simply add an extra 250ml of water per person, adjust the other ingredients, and increase the amount of mushrooms accordingly.

Great that this recipe also mentions not to use boiling water to avoid any potency loss!

Frequently Asked Questions

To make magic mushroom tea, grind or finely chop your dried mushrooms and steep them in water cooled to 60°C (140°F) for 15–20 minutes. Strain out the solids and discard them. Add a tea bag, honey, or ginger to mask the earthy flavour and improve the overall experience.

Magic mushroom tea should be consumed immediately after brewing. Once psilocybin is dissolved in water, it oxidises and degrades rapidly, causing a noticeable loss of potency within hours. Even refrigerating it won't preserve the effects reliably, so always brew fresh right before use.

You should brew magic mushroom tea for 15 to 20 minutes. This is the ideal window for psilocybin to fully infuse into the water without heat degradation. Brewing for less time reduces potency, while brewing significantly longer offers no added benefit and risks weakening the active compounds.

No, freezing magic mushroom tea is not recommended. The freeze-thaw cycle degrades psilocybin and alters its chemical structure, leading to significant potency loss. Since the tea should be consumed immediately anyway, there is no reliable way to store it — always brew a fresh cup right before consumption.

Technically yes — psilocybin mushrooms remain illegal under federal Canadian law. However, several cities like Vancouver have largely decriminalised personal use, and licensed dispensaries operate openly. Enforcement varies widely by province, so always check your local regulations before purchasing or consuming.
